Ubuntu works great in VMware.  I think you just need to install the kernel 
headers for whatever kernel you are using.

Look in Synaptic for something like:
linux-headers-<kernel verion>

Which would be "linux-headers-2.6.8.1-3-386" or something like that for 
the default kernel.
