.bash_profile not run when using graphical login

Hi

If Ubuntu is booted "normally" i.e. log in graphically via GDM to the
desktop, and then a terminal window is opened, .bash_profile does not
get run. This could be considered to be correct as it's only meant to
run for login shells, but I'm not sure it's desirable. At least some
distros do run it (not sure where from) under these circumstances.

I wanted to use the (commented out) section in .bash_profile to add a
local bin directory to my path (which incidentally is missing an "export
PATH" statement I believe) but it's no use if you are running bash from
within Gnome at the moment.

I am thinking of submitting this to bugzilla but I thought I'd get a few
opinions on the list first, as I'm still relatively inexperienced at
debugging Linux.

Andy
