My experience is pretty low on the ladder of understanding Linux, I
switched after two years of experience using Windows; I have learned to
use the command line(how exciting opening an application the first time
with a command) and can make changes to a file using a text editor(what
a great feeling, using a tool and fixing or configuring something) but I
don't have trouble shooting skills and usually freak out when something
breaks.
Two weeks ago today, I installed Ubuntu-Linux having come from Libranet
which I liked a lot and will duel boot when they come out with Libranet
3; I subscribed to and have been following the user email list for over
a week now; I had to ask how to get my network, printer and sound
working, the questions and answers to which come at a regular bases,
were given to me in a gentlemanly manner. I can't tell you how much I
appreciate that and I've only experienced a couple of people going over
the edge through out that time.
I have been learning all week about stuff I had no idea would work or
was available to me, I believe it's because I haven't had to switch
around and get lost looking for the right list to be on; this computer
thing can already be intimidating/overwhelming to me.
So I've chosen to wade through all the emails that come in, I've made a
separate folder for the list and a separate folder for those I want to
refer to; searching or reading through the list represents having
acquired a level of understanding because email user-list used to put me
to sleep, not knowing what people are talking about.
That this pre-release distribution works so well already is amazing to
me, as I do a daily upgrade using 'Synaptic'(learning apt-get and it's
tools is on the list), I'm amazed at the work that is being done.
A long winded reply to say, I've chosen pan for the nuggets of gold that
I've gotten the past week or so. I was counting up the different
distributions I've tried since my first attempt at using Linux three
years ago and reading out of a book; SuSE, Mandrake, Red Hat, Debian,
Gentoo, Libranet, Fedora, and Ubuntu, oh, and one day with Lindows... do
you know how bad Lindows was/is? Ubuntu has been the best encounter I've
had using Linux.
I don't have the answer for the email dilemma but wanted to express my
thoughts around it and thank all those that do wade through the email
and make the effort to help.
Thank you,
Bill
