| works perfectly, but the internal one just flickers and does not look

This was part of the code that we had to revert between X ubuntu20 and
ubuntu21. It should be fixed in the X.org tree, but the 2 attempts we
did to include that code were not successful. Mostlikely because other
parts of the code needs to be backported too. But they are not easy to spot.
