powerbook: wrong image displayed in external screen

I already dealt with this problem for several hours and tested dozens
of X configurations. If the internal screen is configured to use the
frame buffer interface, the external screen does not work. OTOH, if
the internal screen does not use the framebuffer, the external screen
works perfectly, but the internal one just flickers and does not look
very healthy.
I also tried several recipes from the net, all without success. So I
currently do not believe that it is possible to have an external
screen with the Open Source X driver. ATI's proprietary driver might
help, but 1) they do not offer it for ppc, and 2) it is a hell to
install.
If anybody could help this, I would spent her/him a couple of beers
:-)
