Ubuntu and video resolutions..

I have installed Ubuntu on a P3 800 with 512megs ram and a 20gig hd.

Works great but the resolution seems to be locked into a real high
resolution.
I can change it to 1024x768 which is easier to read but it won't stay there.
When I shut down and bring it all back up. I get the high resolution and
have to change it again. Even though I said apply..

I have looked at the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and the video resolutions
all start with 1024x768 and there is no resolution higher listed.

Any Ideas?
