laptop - Compaq N610c acpi cpu fan

Howdy,  I have ubuntu installed on a Compaq N610c.  Using the default
configuration the CPU fan will not turn on when the computer is
running hot which causes the laptop to overheat and freeze.  I am able
to correct this by disabling acpi during boot up by adding the
following "acpi=off" to my menu.lst configuration.  Though with this
setting I lose the ability to throttle my CPU to lower MHZ while idle.

Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks for your time.
