Super-slow response, not quite dead

Matt asked if there was hard-disk activity during the long waits:

not generally, the disk access light was mostly off.

I've reverted to Preview on that machine, but I'm willing to
re-install Sounder 9 for some specific tests if anyone can think of
some. I see (from Oliver Grawert, later in thread) a suggestion to
look at "cat /proc/cpuinfo" would show. Is that worth trying? Is there
anything more? (for the time to re-install plus 1/2 hour for the menu
<G>).

Curious cat here,
Tim
