Mulata, have you tried the 'locate command? e.g.:
locate /usr/bin/evolution
You can substitute any search item after 'locate'...
The 'locate' index is updated daily through a cronjob.
Of course the 'Computer' > 'Search for files' menu option on the Gnome
panel can also take extra options for "deep searches".
Hope I am not underestimating your question.
