search/index software

wondering if there's anyting that automatically or sporadically will
index the drives and allow for deep serches? where you don't have to
specify the folder and runs in a GUI and not terminal?

like apple's soon to come spotlight:

or its ilk.

can't seem to find anything in universe's repository, but, being a
novice, i probably just don't know what to look for.
