about the initial question,

that don't seems to be answered... (it has been arose on others threads
too)

i pain a little with the same question! Debian/ubuntu don't even had a
service command like RH... so here my litle solution

i end up installing (apt-get from universal i think) sysv-rc-conf for a
simple turn on/off services at all levels and wajig (with gjig included)
for view, list services, stop, start or restart without change /rcS.d
or the others (is a package management too, wich increase apt
power!!)

hope this help.
