i have just tried it and copied quite some mp3s (ahem) from my notebook 
to my ubuntu home "entertaintment" box.

i select from the menu Computer > Network, then browse through the 
network, then i think i ended up with smb:///laptop/, which will not 
really work if i have no defined shares.

but with windows boxes, you can use a smb:///laptop/C$ to access the 
whole C drive in your windows, provided you enter the correct user name 
and password. i keyed in mine, and i can see the whole drive.
