Dial-up problems

When you say "standard" network setup program, you mean through the
network-admin tool?  (Computer->System Configuration->Networking)
I couldn't get it to detect my parents' HW modem, so I used pppconfig
and the GNOME Modem Lights applet, and that worked like a charm.
Try running "sudo pppconfig" from the prompt, enter your data. If the
name of your connection is "ISP" then at the prompt, type
sudo pon ISP
and then
sudo poff -a
to hang up.

If that works, then add yourself to the dip group, log out and log
back in again, and you should be able to do pon and poff without
typing sudo.
At that point you can add the Modem Lights applet to one of the menu
bars. Select Preferences and change the pon and poff to pon ISP and
poff -a

If something doesn't work at any step, just report the error that it
gives you here.
