gedit can handle these things and shouldn't be too difficult for novices.

ls /etc/init.d shows all initscripts (the disabled and enabled ones).
But you should be able to distinguish the disabled ones from the others
(either by ls -l or by using a 'colorized' ls, which is on by default)
