Actually, gdm (Gnome Display Manager) and kdm (KDE Display manager)
are't window managers. To change window managers, you need to install
the software you want to use, and then fire up "gconf-editor". Under
"desktop > gnome > applications > window manager", you can set a new
default.

If that functionality exists in Gnome, I sure haven't been able to
find it.... and I looked.... hard. :-)
