Hot swapable SATA drives.

Looking into implementing a backup system using hot-swappable SATA
drives.  Has anyone done this with Ubuntu?

How would the drives be mounted/unmountd - can the gnome 2.8 automount
system handle this - is it possible to get a drive icon like a CD one
to appear on the desktop - will rite-click eject unmount it?

Looking at using single disk caddies.
