CD Player runs but no sound out

Hello, all.

iBook 1.33GHz with Warty
Gnome CD Player will take a CD, look up tracks in the CDDB and auto play
the tracks, however no sound comes out of the computer speakers or
external speakers.  Volumes (app and system) are turned up.

I used xmms in YDL, but don't seem to have it here (I'm new to Ubuntu).
I've checked the How-To.  

I'm open to suggestions or being pointed in the right direction.
