sound prob on an i-386 box

i've done the basic ubuntu install and it's amazing in so many ways, but 
i too seem to be having trouble getting to work on my machine.

checked old postings and can't seem to figure it out, but i am new to 
linux/unix/et al.

it's a compaq presario with a built in crystal sound brand card, if that 
helps.

i get the no mixer found stuff when i try to access volume controls and 
sound card not found message at boot.

any help would be appreciated.
