xserver and installation

Hello,

i am having problems get the xserver running on my system.
after the installation, i get an error that some packages were not
installed. of which most is for the xserver and gnome. sumthing like
46 packages were not installed. is there a log file that i can get to
see exactly which weren't installed ? i know in aptitude it shows me a
list but i would like it in a text file so i can check to download
them from another system.

the main problems seems to come when the package libgtk must be
installled, coz a lot og the other packages require libgtk
where can i download this package, i have tried to look on
archive.ubuntulinux.org, but i am unable to find it.

the iso i downloaded is abviously damaged, and i don't want to
download it again, took me 3 nights to get it down :)

any ideas
