Ubuntu (Warty), kernel 2.6.8 and PcTel WinModems

Hello folks,
I've recently downloaded and installed Warty successfully on the new x86
based PC of my girlfriend. Everything works fine: Audio, video, storage,
etc. except one (Expectable) thing: The internal PcTel Winmodem.
No problem I said and went over to linmodems.org to take a look. The
scanmodem script identified my modem as a PcTel HSP-56 Voice Modem.
I've downloaded and compiled the latest PcTel driver from
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/ which unfortunately does
not seem to compile fine on Ubuntu which is based upon kernel 2.6.8.
I found another modified version of those drivers which should run on
2.6.0 kernels, but at least not on the 2.6.8.
What I need at this point is a driver for a PcTel based WinModem which
will compile and run fine on the 2.6.8 kernel series shipped with Warty.
I would like to ask if someone in here had my same troubles and solved
them in some way.
Many new PCs out there run WinModems unfortunately and Ubuntu support
(At least documentation) for such hardware is urgently needed,
especially for people whom are trying to switch from Windows to Ubuntu.
Thanks in advantage for any feedback.
Best regards,
I.
