I've done several installs of Debian on PowerMacs. It's hard to say
how difficult you might find it because unfortunately the procedure
varies depeding on exactly which computer model you have.

It's funny to see you write that, because my impression is that most
people see it the other way -- a default KDE setup looks a lot like
Windows... though of course they all share common features. Gnome goes
out of its way to try to present a cleaner, simpler interface, and KDE
goes out of its way to provide more features than most people use...

Of course I'm oversimplifying it and I can't really speak for YOUR preferences.

The default desktop environment in Debian is KDE so you might want to
give it a try. http://www.debian.org/

Ubuntu is a "child" distribution to Debian so everything you learn in
one transfers pretty well to the other.
