I didn't address this directly in my previous message -- I recommend
doing a test installation using an ordinary install -- you may find
that the performance of Gnome is acceptable -- in my opinion it's
borderline on this Pentium 200, so with my debian installation I used
icewm as you suggested. Their faq suggested xfce which I haven't tried
but maybe it's similar.
