Blank screen after installation

I just installed ubuntu on my Dell D800 laptop.
Didn't have an internet connection so it didn't update all the packages after it was installed, but everything else went pretty much smooth.

However, I was never able to boot up. Everytime it boots up I get a black screen right after it says "starting gnome display manager"
At that point I can't do anything/see anything, and have to press the power button on the laptop, in which the screen comes back and says that it's unloading the modules and rebooting and stuff.

What can I do guys? I'm not a linux expert and don't know how to proceed.
