"non ubuntu apps" menu

aaah so is that how the menu entries are made? I did wonder.. 
Every time I install things from universe I ave to go and make menu
entries for them, so if someone could provide a pointer on how these
.desktop files work (are they packaged into the .deb file?) I would be
happy to spend some time making some up for various packages.
I just did a quick google on the subject, but saw nothing immediately
useful to help me out.
Being a VB programmer by proffesion (I know!) and not getting round to
learning python yet Ive been wanting to help out in some way so if
someone could tell me how to go about creating these .desktop files
Ill start straight away (well - after work (damn vb!!! gumble grumble)
)
