DVD burning problems

I just tried it as:

growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=the.iso

and it burned sweet as a bun. So I think your very first reply was on the 
money. FWIW both /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd are symlinks to /dev/hdc on
my system. Why using the symlink made the difference? - really wierd.
