I'd not expect either to differ from t'other:-)
-dvd-compat won't make a difference.
I was probably using 2.4 with ide-scsi loaded for cdrecord. Device name
shouldn't make a difference, either i works or it doesn't.
I have used /dev/hdb (which is where I connected my burner); that was
probably on 2.6.
