Booting Warty on a Beige G3 Tower

Hello All,
I am having some difficulty with Warty and my beige PowerMac G3. I have
successfully installed Warty off of CD using Boot X 1.2.2. Install seems to
go well until the point where you have to reboot, and boot into Warty. I
pulled the boot kernel file from another PPC system [Graphite iMac],
vmlinux-2.6.8.1-3.powerpc, and placed it in the ³Linux Kernels² folder at
the root of my OS 9 System Folder. From what the installer said, root was
located at /dev/hda2. In Boot X, you can fill in /dev/ [XXX] where XXX is
the corresponding partition on the device where linux is installed. I
inputted hda2, selected the 2.6.8.1 kernel from the pull down menu in Boot
X. I thought that this would work. It did not. Also, a little bit about
the hardware of my system:
128MB RAM
15 GB Maxtor HD IDE
4 GB Seagate SCSI
ATi Radeon 7000 PCI [latest ROM fyi] = invoked with
video=radeonfb:1024x768-24 at 75 in More Kernel Arguments, so it won¹t use the
Rage pro on board
Generic USB Card = To use the Apple Pro USB Keyboard
Apple 10/100 NIC = Seen as a DEC Tulip in Linux, didn¹t want to use the 10Mb
on board...to slow.
Here is what I get when I set Boot X to use the vmlinux-2.6.8.1 kernel:
.
.
.
hda: Maxtor 2R015H1, ATA DISK drive
hda: MDMA, cycleTime: 120, accessTime: 75, recTime: 45
hda Set MDMA timing for mode 2, reg: 0x00211526
hda: Enabling MultiWord DMA 2
.
.
.
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda2" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)
<0>Rebooting in 180 seconds..
The dots are additional info I omitted from the kernel output. Mac OS 9 is
installed on the 4 GB drive with Warty taking up all of the Maxtor drive. I
know that this system has some issues seeing past the first 8GBs of the boot
drive for installing OS X, which might be the issue. I¹ve added to the More
Kernel Arguments line root=/dev/hda2, but this produces the same results.
I guess what I¹m asking, has anyone successfully gotten Warty installed on
this type of system [if it is even possible], and if so, how did you go
about doing it? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
