Ubuntu is not Debian?

Ubuntu isn't debian in the same way that debian unstable isn't the
same as debian stable. Whenever you start mixing packages you can get
into problems. The problems may be a bit larger between ubuntu and
debian than debian unstable and debian stable but still....

It's quite possible to mix debian packages with ubuntu once but you
are on your own and totally unsupported and stuff WILL break sooner or
later.

However, most packages in debian has already been recompiled for you
in the "universe" and are ready to use in ubuntu. If there is
something else you need that's in debian but not in ubuntu the best
way (I find it to be anyway) is to recompile that package on your own
ubuntu box.
