smbfs: smbmount ignores uid and gid options

Package: smbfs
Version: 3.0.9-1ubuntu2
Severity: important

Ok, I think it's a problem with the smbfs kernel module or something, as
with my googling I saw someone post the problem (and a patch) to the
kernel mailing list.. but no one replied.

Anyhow, smbfs ignores the uid= and gid= options.
This renders smbmount utterly useless to me. As I'm unable to access any
of the data on the shares I mount, without being root. And who does
stuff as root?
(The default behaviour is to use the uid of the user that owns the files
on the server.. which of course doesn't exist on the client).

Thanks!

David
