Automagical mounting no longer working

i was using the default user but for some reason it wasn't a member of
the plugdev group. I remember screwing around with the users some time
back due to another problem that I had.
However, even after adding my user to plugdev group (and hal group,
just for good measure), and rebooting, still no automount.
HAL is working. Device Manager shows that the thumdrive is loaded by
the system and correctly identifies it.
Anywhere else I should look? Thank you for your help.
