It's not that my linuxes don't work, it's just that something created 
extra space between active
partitions where originally, the partitions were contiguous.  The spaces 
developed sometime later
but there's no problem in the operation in any Linux that I can detect..

I originally said that the gaps were about 20 MB but on further check 
with cfdisk, I see they're only 40 KB.
