After reading the “how to” install of Ubuntu, I went ahead and burned the
ISO for AMD64 systems into a CD. Made the CD bootable and started up the
computer with CD boot support (from the BIOS). This is what I got:

Caldera Dr-Dos starts and then

The system memory manager (EMM386.exe) has detected an error caused by a
fault in one of the device drivers or programs loaded in the system.

Due to this fault the system is probably in an unstable state, and you are
therefore recommended to reboot the computer immediately. If the problem
persists, then try to isolate which program is at fault (if you have loaded
several, then load them one at a time until the fault appears), then contact
the technical support department for that program.

Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press Del to reboot, press any other key
to just abort the current program

I’m still trying to figure out what programs it might be referring to, as it
is booting from a CD with the ISO file and bootable track only. Any ideas of
what is happening?

AMD A64 3200+
512Mb memory DDR 400
Asus K8N-E Deluxe motherboard
