Do you run warty on a powerpc machine (e.g. apple)? It's a known bug
in the warty version of synaptic that the package list goes away on
PPC machines. A fixed package can be found at:
http://people.ubuntulinux.org/~mvo/synaptic/warty/

Install it with "sudo dpkg -i synaptic_0.53.4-1ubuntu6_powerpc.deb"
(if you run a powerpc) and run
"sudo rm /root/.synaptic/synaptic.conf" after that.

sorry,
 Michael
