-So in order to do that, I need to fill the "album" and "artist" fields
of all the files, with the same data. Since I have 27 files to
process,
I thought that would be the ideal time to experiment "mass
renaming" (whatever you call it), if just to save me time and hassle.-
Vince, here's the sure-fire way to do it. Ready to learn the power of
the command line?
Use synaptic to install mp3info. Don't get the gui version, get the
125k command line version.
Put your collection of files in a single folder. Make sure they're the
only mp3s in the folder.
Now, mp3info will report back to you anything you need to know about
the file (except how it sounds). Example: in your folder type "mp3info
*.mp3" and press return.
File: Killer - 01 - Under My Wheels.mp3
Title: Under My Wheels Track: 1
Artist: Alice Cooper
Album: Killer Year:
Comment: Genre: Rock [17]
File: Killer - 02 - Be My Lover.mp3
Title: Be My Lover Track: 2
Artist: Alice Cooper
Album: Killer Year:
Comment: Genre: Rock [17]
Let's set the comment field. Type:
mp3info -c "tag this" *.mp3
Now type "mp3info *.mp3" again:
File: Killer - 01 - Under My Wheels.mp3
Title: Under My Wheels Track: 1
Artist: Alice Cooper
Album: Killer Year:
Comment: tag this Genre: Rock [17]
File: Killer - 02 - Be My Lover.mp3
Title: Be My Lover Track: 2
Artist: Alice Cooper
Album: Killer Year:
Comment: tag this Genre: Rock [17]
Cool, huh?
So, to make all your mp3s part of the same "album" just enter
mp3info -l "my album" *.mp3
To make them all the same artist, type
mp3info -a "the artist" *.mp3
If you want to set the play order of the song titles you'll either need
to regex that from the filename or do it interactively. To edit all the
tags one each file one by one type:
mp3info -i *.mp3
and it will give you a nice screen where you can easily move from field
to field with the tab key and set the tag with the enter key.
I'm almost sorry for not pointing this out yesterday. Quite honestly,
mp3info is the tool I use more than just about anything else. Type "man
mp3info" and you'll see detailed all the handy stuff you can do with
this tool.
