No Gaim Sounds with Rhythmbox playing.

I'm glad this thread came up, because I had not even noticed the lack of
sound all around when an app had control. But, I have been driven mad by
xine changing the pcm volume setting thus causing me to have to open the
master volume panel like five times a day, and I've also been aggravated
by xine crashing on avis and killing my sound server so completely I
have to reboot. Thanks to this thread I was prompted to fix it. Don't
know if it's solved the sound server crash (only happens with xine,
only when playing avis) but the rest is easy.

open gaim. click preferences>sounds. Choose ESD where it says "sound
method."

ctrl-l any nautilus window and enter preferences:///
choose advanced>Multimedia Systems Selector
choose ESD in both boxes.

choose computer>desktop preferences>sound and make sure activate sound
server is selected.

open up the file ~/.xine/config

find># Audio mixer control method. Make the line below look like this:

gui.audio_mixer_method:Software

find># audio driver to use
Make the line below read as follows:

audio.driver:esd

You might also want to find>greedy and set:

video.deinterlace_method:greedy

(Make sure you remove the comment marker (#) on each of these settings
or they will have no effect.)

Now you can play as many video files as your CPU can tolerate and have
independant sound control on every one of them while you jingle away in
gaim and jam to the beats in rhythmbox.
