Can't unmount USB volume

How would do an expert user?
I mean, what would have been the solution to unmount a volume without 
having to remove fam (or to hardly unplug the usb devices), if any?

My opinion is that fam is definitely an improvement, but maybe not 
mature enough to be a default in the distrib. On the other hand, if such 
facilities are not included as default, people wont use them, and bugs 
wont be discovered...

But the problem I was facing was about to make me leave the Ubuntu fan 
club...
