'X' emulating Monochome displays ?

Yes, this is what I would like to do... display shades of grey on my
current Ubuntu machine, using my colour 17" monitor.

Will apparently managed to do it simply by adding "Visual "GrayScale" to
the XF86Config-4 file, but it didn't work for me.
I am probably just doing something wrong though. I added the line in the
'device' section.
