I think more people know what OOo and firefox are thanks to some 
excellent publicity in the press.  Plus the simple fact is they are 
*better* apps for the majority of people.  Please note *better* is 
subjective so it's not worth arguing over.

What is worth arguing over is the fact that ubuntu *needs* other free 
software to survive and it would be better off sharing the good 
publicity by running with the glamour boys of freesoftware rather than 
sticking with apps that are written for gnome2.

It's better having the class leaders out of the box and downloading 
other apps.  You don't want to be downloading stuff that the *average* 
desktop or server system requires.  Essentials shouldn't be off the cd.

ubuntu != gnome desktop linux

ubuntu == a great linux distro (that is happens to have a great desktop)
