Matt,

If you go to www.ubuntuforums.org and search on Howto - Install vmware
tools in Ubuntu, you will find some good directions.  I printed it out
and can't read the huge URL or I would point you to it directly.  The
main trick is killing gdm so you can get out of the graphical
environment.  Plus you need some other packages installed.
