smp boot and install?

I've got an old Abit BP6 motherboard with dual 400 MHz celerons - and
the Warty install stops a couple of steps into the install, with a blue
screen, and goes no further.  The live-CD fails just past drive
detection.  I suspect I need to give it a boot option for SMP, but can't
find the option in the help screen.  It's gotta be simple - can anyone
help?
