resolution in livecd

So I tried the livecd that came with the Warty install CD, on my wife's
new Dell PC.
Her video chipset is as follows:
0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp.
82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
In the livecd, it falls back on VESA mode at horribly low resolution,
but if she installs Warty, it detects the chipset fine and configures it
properly.
They're from the same release, yes? Why would one work and not the
other?
