Multimedia needs

One thing I really miss out of my Windows machine is the necessity for
converting downloaded avi files to CVCD or PVCD.These formats allow to
convert movies in a one disc readable in DVD,not 2 discs like VCD (in
fact,they're VCD variants).Canopus procoder and other appz like it are a
must for a lot of people.I know there are a few scripts for doing this in
Linux using mplayer,transcode and mjpegtools.Could someone drop some light
on this.
