Well I think you need some kind of bootloader no matter what, and 
besides using/learning grub really makes your day if you experience a crash.

You could use Lilo or Windows XP boot.ini, but in my experience GRUB is 
far superior to both. Grub will be almost invisible if you set the timer 
to 0.
