I, myself, installed Ubuntu "over" Mandrake (9.2). Ubuntu will not
install over a Linux distribution that it recognizes as such, so you
have to delete the Mandrake partitions, and then allow Ubuntu's
installer to create its partitions in the resulting unused space.
fdisk (I like cfdisk better) will let you know which is the fat32
partition that you want to preserve. Delete the Mandrake "Linux" or
"ext2" partitions.
One word of warning, my system is actually triple boot with one win32
partition, a Red Hat 7.3 partition set, and a Ubuntu partition set.
Both the Mandrake and the Ubuntu install scripts promised to update
rather than overwrite my grub menu.list, but both overwrote it. Both
recognized and successfully set up a windows boot, and both failed to
set up a Red Hat boot. If you have another non-windows OS you want to
preserve to ability to boot, back up you menu.list file before
installing Ubuntu (or any other distro).
