Not able to install ubuntu

I have been trying for several days to install ubuntu, but everytime I
get to the partintioning of the disk I get an error.  I have Windows
XP on hda1 and want to install ubuntu on hda2 and swap on hda3.  I
tried to install FC3 and it worked fine, so I don't think there is a
problem with my disk.  The error I get is that partition #2 could not
be formatted.  Does anyone have any ideas how I can get around this?
