could it have been possible that the ubuntu developers used a 
version of ping that prevents what the patch fixes to avoid
having to patch again.

Why is it that ping wont let me send over sized packets these days? I
used to have great fun trying to crash my network. I mean, it's not like
you could use it in, 'the real world' these days, everyone is patched
against that trick.
