broken system, then menus change

On my latest apt-get update/dist-upgrade in hoary I ran into multiple
problems. Some of the gnome upgrades, like the gnome-menus package
were broken due to conflics with kde files. For awhile my computer
menu was entirely on my desktop. I think I have worked out the
issues, at least I'm not getting error messages, but the menus have
drastically changed and I don't know if I messed up, or it's a genuine
upgrade/update. Instead of having a computer menu, there is an
Actions menu with very little in it (Run application, Search For
Files, Recent Documents, Take Screenshot, Lock Screen, and Log Out).
Most of what was in the computer menu is now under the applications
menu under preferences of system settings.
Is this a new update for hoary and the way the menus are supposed to
be? If it is, seems like a pretty bad setup for the menus, I much
prefer the old way. If it's not and I broke something in gnome, can
somebody tell me what I need to reinstall and do to fix my system?
