Ubuntu is not a good distribution for Multimedia

Ah, ok. Then i'd suffest using a dedicated MM distro.

As much as i like Debian, iff you look for a really polished MM distro
i'd go for PlanetCCRMA. There are constant software updated so you'll
allways work with rather new versions (not allways true with Agnula).
Oh, and they use apt, so you still use Debian tools :-)
What's the problem with "dot" files? And, as i allready said, there are
good reasons to use (patched) 2.4 for multimedia.
