Here's what I did to fix a long-standing sound problem with my
Thinkpad 390X.

While running Linux, sounds were choppy, slow and distorted, unless a
certain PCMCIA network card was plugged in, then sound was normal.
(worked with Dlink wireless, Realtek 8139 nic but not USRobotics/IBM
modem or Xircom nic/modem)

IBM Thinkpad 390X 2626 (celeron 400, Essolo-1 sound)
BIOS ID ISB055WW
BIOS Date 11/30/1999 (which I think is current)

F1 on boot to enter BIOS Setup Utility
Config
Advanced Setup
Power

Scroll to the bottom of Power (there are 6 more options off the bottom
of the screen), bottom entry is "PCI Bus Power Management" (defaults
to "Automatic") - change to "Disabled".

F10 for Save and Exit, sound now works normally!
