Grub and Wvdial

Hello,

Have installed Ubuntu 3 times [install fatigue].  The last time Grub 
just hung there.  I think maybe
I didn't disconnect Wvdial although I can't understand why that would 
make Grub fail, and now I can't make Wvial work,
and I can't remember how I did it before.

Any suggestions would be helpful.
